Part 4 in The Destructive D series

The title of this blog might sound like a Motown band from the ’70s, but Dyskinesia is far more than a catchy name—it’s a crucial metric in chiropractic assessments. As we explore the Destructive D’s, it’s time to dance along with the details that make Dyskinesia one of the most minimized yet important factors in understanding and managing spinal health.

What is Dyskinesia?

Dyskinesia refers to altered kinetic function, which means abnormal or impaired movement. While it’s often associated with diseases like Parkinson’s, where it manifests as uncontrollable and involuntary movements, Dyskinesia in the chiropractic context speaks to altered motion in the spinal joints due to suboptimal neuromuscular control. This isn’t just a matter of stiff or poorly moving joints—Dyskinesia is a neurological event that reflects a loss of control within the body’s nervous system.

When we think about the impact of spinal misalignments, it’s easy to imagine that the motion and position of spinal joints would be affected. Many chiropractic students come from a kinesiological background under the belief that chiropractic is mostly about the restoration of joint mobility. However, Dyskinesia goes beyond just joint movement; it involves the muscle activity that controls these joints and the neurological signals that guide this activity. When spinal joints don’t move correctly, they send a lot of “noisy” information along neurological pathways, disrupting the clear communication that is essential for healthy function.

Dyskinesia: A Central Component of Vertebral Subluxation

Dyskinesia is a core element of the vertebral subluxation complex—a condition where spinal misalignments lead to a cascade of health and behavioral issues. The presence of Dyskinesia indicates not just a mechanical problem but a profound neurological disruption that affects the entire body. Neurology is infinitely connected to every bodily function, both locally and globally. What affects the part impacts the whole. Assessing a local spinal segment for restriction or observing affected postures should trigger a line of questioning to assess the impact on the whole person. Dyskinesia, as part of the subluxation complex, is directly related to a loss of control in the nervous system, leading to altered spinal function and broader health challenges.

The Chiropractic Approach to Dyskinesia Chiropractic care is unique in its approach to Dyskinesia because it focuses on correcting the underlying neurological interference that causes altered movement. By adjusting the spine, chiropractors aim to restore normal joint movement and, more importantly, recalibrate the neurological pathways that control these movements. This process helps clear the “noise” in the system, allowing for smoother, more coordinated movements, which in turn contributes to overall well-being.

Dyskinesia is not just a result of spinal misalignments; it’s also a causative factor in prolonged postural compensations and is closely related to the other “Destructive D’s,” especially Dysponesis. The spine has 24 moveable segments with facets loaded with proprioceptive sensors that connect directly via the spinocerebellar tracts to the brain (cerebellum). The adage “Garbage In, Garbage Out” relates to the noise in neurological communication that not only affects posture but wastes essential neurological energy.

Measuring Dyskinesia with INSiGHT Scanning Technologies

Here’s the bottom line: Dyskinesia and the other Destructive D’s are measurable! That means that chiropractic care planning based on objective data is a logical and reproducible process that looks far beyond how a patient is feeling. CLA has invested years of development to refine INSiGHT scanning so that the Destructive D’s can be individually identified and tracked. Dyskinesia, for example, can be specifically tracked using the INSiGHT spineROM which complements the use of the neuroPULSE (HRV), neuroCORE (sEMG), neuroTHERMAL exams.

You can specifically measure Dyskinesia using the spineROM. This dual inclinometer is designed to evaluate spinal movement across different regions of the spine. The data collected not only identifies areas of restricted movement but also reflects the neurological interference that contributes to broader health issues. With reports referencing AMA data tables for disability ranking, the spineROM provides a comprehensive view of how Dyskinesia is impacting a patient’s health and guides the care plan to restore normal function.

Bringing It All Together

Dyskinesia is more than just a physical issue; it’s a neurological event with widespread effects on health and well-being. Chiropractic recognized the connection between spinal-neurological  function on human health, well-being, and performance. That is why the basis of the chiropractic approach is referred to as a vertebral subluxation. It is also why the art of chiropractic is not limited to assessing spinal joint fixation but links Dyskinesia to the neurological event that it really is.

Through precise measurement and targeted adjustments, chiropractors help patients achieve better control of both their spine and their nervous system. It’s important for chiropractors and assistants to be aware of the technological advancements that exist for neurological examinations and reporting. The mission of CLA is to see an INSiGHT scanning system in every chiropractic office on our planet, ensuring that every patient, from newborns to super seniors, can benefit from an INSiGHT chiropractic evaluation, whether it begins with wellness checks or manages bigger challenges.

Part 3 in The Destructive D series

As we journey through life, our nervous system constantly adapts to the challenges we face, ensuring that our bodies function optimally. However, when the autonomic nervous system (ANS)—the system responsible for regulating involuntary bodily functions like heart rate, digestion, and temperature—becomes dysregulated, it can lead to a condition known as Dysautonomia. This condition represents a significant deviation from the healthy state our bodies are meant to maintain, impacting our resilience and longevity.

Understanding Dysautonomia

Dysautonomia occurs when the autonomic nervous system(ANS) fails to regulate body functions properly. A specific function of the ANS is to regulate skin temperature as well as organ and gland function.  These regulatory signals travel directly through the spinal nerves to the organs and glands. If spinal nerve interference is present, it can manifest in a variety of ways, such as irregular heart rate, abnormal blood pressure, digestive issues, and even temperature regulation problems. Essentially, it’s the body’s inability to maintain internal balance, which can lead to a range of health problems, both minor and severe.

The Chiropractic Connection

Chiropractic care is well-positioned to address Dysautonomia because of its focus on the nervous system. By correcting vertebral subluxations—misalignments in the spine that interfere with nervous system function—chiropractors help restore balance within the ANS. This, in turn, can alleviate the symptoms of Dysautonomia and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Measuring Dysautonomia with INSiGHT Scanning Technologies

To effectively manage Dysautonomia, it’s crucial to have a clear, objective understanding of how the autonomic nervous system is functioning. The non-invasive, INSiGHT NeuroTHERMAL scan provides this insight by measuring skin temperature differentials along the spine. These measurements offer valuable information about regional autonomic function and reveal patterns of stress that may correlate with vertebral subluxations. By visualizing these patterns, chiropractors can tailor their care to address the specific needs of each patient, helping to restore balance and improve overall health.

Bringing It All Together

Dysautonomia is a complex condition with wide-ranging effects on health, but with the right tools and approach, it can be effectively managed. The INSiGHT NeuroTHERMAL scan empowers chiropractors to make informed decisions about care, ensuring that each adjustment is targeted and effective. This technology not only enhances the precision of care but also reinforces the vital role chiropractic plays in maintaining the delicate balance of the autonomic nervous system, leading to better outcomes for patients of all ages.

Part 2 in The Destructive D series

When we consider health, we often think of visible signs like pain, posture, or even physical fitness. However, much of what determines our health and well-being occurs beneath the surface, within the intricate workings of the nervous system. One such hidden process is Dysponesis—a term that describes abnormal, involuntary neuromuscular activity that can disrupt the body’s natural state of balance and energy expenditure.

What is Dysponesis?

Dysponesis is a condition characterized by errors in energy expenditure due to inappropriate and inefficient nerve activity. Unlike conditions that produce obvious symptoms like pain or immobility, Dysponesis operates more subtly, often going unnoticed until its effects have significantly accumulated. These errors can lead to unnecessary energy use, stress on the nervous system, and a host of other health issues over time.

In the context of chiropractic care, Dysponesis is an essential concept because it reflects the body’s response to vertebral subluxations—misalignments in the spine that cause nerve interference. These subluxations disrupt normal communication between the brain and body, leading to the covert but chronic neurological errors that define Dysponesis.

The Role of Dysponesis in Health

Dysponesis can be thought of as a silent saboteur of health. Living in a constant gravitational field “costs” the body an enormous amount of neuromuscular energy. Postural and vertebral misalignments slowly erode the body’s efficiency and resilience. As these neuromuscular errors accumulate, they create a feedback loop of dysfunction that can lead to more serious health problems over time, including fatigue, and reduced adaptive capacity.

One of the most concerning aspects of Dysponesis is its ability to drain the body’s energy reserves. As the nervous system becomes bogged down with unnecessary neuromuscular activity, it has less energy available for healing, growth, and adaptation. This diminished energy reserve can make the body more susceptible to stress and less capable of responding to the demands of daily life. As well, Dysponesis is intimately linked to the reduced adaptive response caused by ongoing Sympathetic dominant reactions in the ANS.

Measuring Dysponesis with INSiGHT Scanning Technologies

Thanks to advances in technology, Dysponesis is no longer invisible. The INSiGHT scanning systems by CLA have made it possible to objectively measure and visualize the neuromuscular disruptions caused by subluxations.

The INSiGHT neuroCORE’s  surface electromyography (sEMG) scan is a key tool for detecting Dysponesis. This scan measures the electrical activity of muscles along the spine, capturing the subtle, abnormal signals that indicate neuromuscular dysfunction. By visualizing these covert errors, chiropractors can identify areas where subluxations are causing unnecessary energy expenditure and nerve interference.

The sEMG scan provides a visual representation of the body’s neuromuscular activity, making it easier for both chiropractors and patients to understand the impact of Dysponesis. This objective data is crucial for developing personalized care plans that target the underlying causes of neuromuscular dysfunction, rather than just addressing symptoms.

The Chiropractic Approach to Dysponesis

Chiropractic care is uniquely positioned to address Dysponesis because of its focus on the nervous system and spinal health. Through precise adjustments, chiropractors can correct vertebral subluxations, reducing the neuromuscular errors that define Dysponesis. Over time, these adjustments help to restore proper nerve function, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the body’s overall adaptability.

One of the most powerful aspects of chiropractic care is its ability to make lasting changes in the nervous system. By reducing Dysponesis, chiropractic adjustments help to reprogram the body’s neuromuscular responses, creating a new pattern of efficiency and resilience. This not only alleviates current health issues but also helps to prevent future problems from developing.

Bringing It All Together

Dysponesis may be hidden from view, but its impact on health is significant. By understanding and addressing this silent disruptor, chiropractors can help patients achieve better health outcomes and greater overall well-being. With the help of INSiGHT scanning technologies, Dysponesis is no longer an invisible threat—it is a measurable, trackable aspect of neurology that can be effectively managed through chiropractic care.

The journey to health is not just about treating symptoms; it’s about understanding the deeper processes at play within the body. Dysponesis is one such process, and by addressing it, chiropractors can unlock the full potential of the nervous system, allowing patients to thrive at every stage of life.

Stay tuned as we continue to explore the Destructive D’s and demonstrate how today’s INSiGHT technologies make invisible neurology visible and trackable.

Part 1 in The Destructive D series

Imagine your nervous system as a communication network, with messages constantly being sent between your body and brain. These messages, known as afferent signals, are crucial for maintaining ease within your body. But what happens when these signals become distorted? This is where Dysafferentation comes into play – one of the Destructive D’s, that disrupts the flow of communication and can lead to significant health challenges.

What is Dysafferentation?

Dysafferentation refers to the distortion of afferent signals—messages traveling from the body to the brain. Vertebral subluxations, which are associated with spinal misalignments, have been shown to directly influence afferent input to the brain. When these signals are disrupted, the brain receives incorrect or “noisy”  information, leading to less-than-optimal responses back to the body. This miscommunication contributes to a range of health issues, from chronic pain and inflammation to reduced immunological responsiveness and neurodevelopmental challenges. Most importantly, dysafferentation impacts the adaptive reserve, making the person continually more vulnerable to everyday stressors.

Chiropractic’s Role in Addressing Dysafferentation

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring clear communication within the nervous system. By adjusting misalignments in the spine, and resetting the tone of the nervous system, chiropractors help to eliminate the interference that causes Dysafferentation. This allows the nervous system to function more efficiently, improving the body’s ability to heal and maintain health.

Measuring Dysafferentation with INSiGHT Scanning Technologies

To fully understand the impact of Dysafferentation, it’s essential to have tools that can measure the adaptability and function of the nervous system. The INSiGHT neuroPULSE scan that measures Heart Rate Variability (HRV) provides a window into how well the nervous system is adapting to stress. HRV measures the balance and activity within the autonomic nervous system, allowing the adaptive reserve to be evaluated and tracked.  With this critical information, chiropractors can gain valuable insights into the patient’s nervous system and make informed decisions about care planning.

Bringing It All Together

Dysafferentation represents a breakdown in the essential communication pathways of the nervous system, with far-reaching implications for health. However, with the help of advanced technologies like the neuroPULSE, Chiropractors can identify and address these issues with precision. By restoring clear communication within the nervous system, we can help patients achieve better health outcomes and a higher quality of life, reinforcing the power of chiropractic care to promote and enhance overall well-being.

The Destructive D’s

The D’s represent biological and neurological processes that describe situations deviating from healthy ranges. For instance, Dysregulation describes a process where the regulation of glands and organs is out of sync and underperforming. However, the most damaging of the D’s occur in neurological processes, with Dysafferentation being the worst of the worst.

Dysafferentation refers to distorted afferent neurological signals that travel from the body to the brain through conflicted pathways. These distorted signals trigger less-than-optimal responses from the brain back to the body. This “Garbage in, Garbage out” effect highlights the critical role of clear communication within the nervous system. On the flip side, the chiropractic adjustment offers a powerful opposite: “Good in, Good out.” Through the adjustment, a cascade of positive neurological signals is released, rewriting conflicted pathways and reorganizing brain-based communication.

Measuring the Destructive D’s with INSiGHT Scanning Technologies

Today’s advanced technologies, like the INSiGHT scanning systems by CLA, have made it possible to measure and track the impact of these Destructive D’s and confirm the presence of Vertebral Subluxations.  Each of the D’s—Dysafferentation, Dysponesis, Dysautonomia, and Dyskinesia —can be objectively measured using different INSiGHT instruments, making invisible neurology visible and trackable.

  1. Dysafferentation: The INSiGHT neuroPULSE measures Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and provides a window into how well the body’s nervous system is adapting to stress, directly reflecting the presence of dysafferentation. By measuring the balance and activity within the ANS, a patient’s adaptive reserve can be evaluated. HRV is a powerful metric that highlights the overall adaptability of the nervous system and its ability to regulate itself under various conditions.

  2. Dysponesis: Dysponesis is characterized by abnormal, involuntary neuromuscular activity, which can be measured using the INSiGHT neuroCORE measuring surface electromyography (sEMG). This scan captures these covert errors in energy expenditure, providing a visual representation of how subluxations disrupt normal motor neurological function.

  3. Dysautonomia:

The autonomic nervous system’s role in regulating bodily functions can be compromised by dysautonomia. The INSiGHT neuroTHERMAL scan measures skin temperature differentials, offering insights into the state of regional autonomic function and revealing patterns of neurological compensations that correlate with vertebral subluxations.

  4. Dyskinesia: This refers to altered spinal movement, which is present in all definitions of the subluxation. Dyskinesia is more than just a physical limitation; it reflects neurological interference that affects the entire body. The INSiGHT spineROM, a dual inclinometer, is designed to measure motion in each spinal region and is an excellent tool when managing injury and disability cases.

Bringing It All Together

The combination of the D’s drives the science behind the philosophy and art that distinguish chiropractic as an authentic, unique, and powerful healthcare profession. The ability to measure these D’s with precision technologies like the INSiGHT scanning systems ensures that every patient, from newborns to seniors, receives a comprehensive and objective evaluation. This not only enhances care but also reinforces the vital role chiropractic plays in long-term health and well-being.

Stay tuned as I dig a little deeper in a 4 Part, Destructive D’s series and show how today’s scanning technologies make invisible neurology visible and trackable.
